COLOMBO – The United Nations General Assembly in New York on December 6 adopted a resolution sponsored by six countries comprising Sri Lanka, Liechtenstein, Andorra, Mexico, Nepal, and India declaring December 21 as ‘World Meditation Day’.
The resolution recognizes meditation’s contribution to health and well-being and its universality, a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism said on Thursday (19), noting that Seventy-one states from all geographical regions and cultural backgrounds co-sponsored the resolution which was adopted by consensus.
It also said the representative of Liechtenstein, who introduced the draft resolution on behalf of the six main sponsoring countries, had said that at a time of armed conflict, climate crisis, and emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, it was important to support and uplift the human consciousness including through meditation.
The International Day will provide an important anchor in the UN calendar year to promote further understanding of the practice and benefits of meditation for the health and well-being of people worldwide, the statement said.
