COLOMBO – Sri Lanka’s Department of Irrigation on Sunday (24) issued a warning for possible floods, between Nov. 25 and Nov. 28, in 12 flood-prone river basin areas across the country.
The department issued the warning considering the current low-pressure situation in the Bay of Bengal, which might enhance within the next few days.
The flood-prone river basins are mainly situated in north-central, central and eastern Sri Lanka, the department said.
Meanwhile, the Department of Meteorology issued a ‘red alert’ warning that the low-pressure area over the southwest Bay of Bengal had intensified into a depression over the central-southwest Bay of Bengal by Monday (25) morning.
It said the system located about 600 km southeast of Trincomalee was expected to further develop and move closer to the east coast of the island, with cloudy skies over most parts of the island and showers or thundershowers occurring at times in the Northern, North-central, Eastern, Central and Uva provinces.
Showers or thundershowers will also occur at several places elsewhere in the island during the evening or night, the Met Department forecast, with showers or thundershowers expected in coastal areas of Western and North-western provinces during the morning.
Very heavy showers above 150 mm are likely at some places in Northern Province and Trincomalee district, and heavy showers above 100 mm are likely at some places in Northern, North-central, Central and Uva Provinces and in Batticaloa, Ampara district, it said, adding that strong winds of about (40-50) kmph can be expected at times over Northern, North-central and Eastern Provinces.
The Met Department urged the general public to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
Separately, the National Building Research Organization (NBRO) said on Monday, that landslide warnings issued for Badulla, Galle, Kegalle, Nuwara Eliya and Ratnapura districts were still in effect.
