Sri Lanka lifts post-election curfew at 12 noon Sunday
COLOMBO – Sri Lanka lifted an island-wide post-election Police curfew imposed at 10:00 p.m. on Saturday (21) at noon on Sunday (22), local media said quoting Police Spokesman Nihal Talduwa.
The curfew imposed after voting concluded on what election monitors called the most peaceful election in the island’s history, was set to be lifted at 6:00 a.m. Sunday, but extended by six hours till noon. No reason was given for the curfew extension.
Counting of the votes was continuing and results were being released throughout the morning at designated counting stations. Marxist JVP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayaka was leading the votes with around 40% as of 11:55 hours.
