COLOMBO – A photography exhibition titled ‘Uncover’ that aims to create a discourse on the struggles of the voiceless people, got underway at the Harold Peiris Gallery, Lionel Wendt Art Centre, Colombo 7, on Thursday (4).
Organized by the ACT NOW Campaign of the National Christian Evangelical Alliance of Sri Lanka (NCEASL), the exhibition, which is open from 10:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and is scheduled to continue till July 8, highlights key issues that are inadequately addressed in mainstream Sri Lankan media and not widely recognized as threats to democracy. These include violations of freedom of religion or belief, land grabbing, enforced disappearances, militarization, and the challenges faced by the Malaiyaha Tamil community.
The inaugural events on Thursday included a panel discussion on the theme ‘The Pursuit of Justice: Dream or Reality?’ with Thyagi Ruwanpathirana, South Asia Regional Researcher at Amnesty International, Anushani Alagarajah, Director of Adayaalam Centre for Policy Research, Gowthaman Balachandran, Attorney at Law and Sampath Samarakoon, Senior Researcher and editor of Vikalpa at the Centre for Policy Alternatives as the panellists.
On Friday (5), ‘Uncover’ will screen the documentary film ‘Thaainilam’ by Someetharan. The exhibition will conclude on Monday (8) with a discussion on ‘Justice for Malaiyaha Tamils: A Story of Use and Misuse’.
Initiated in 2018, ACT NOW aims to equip youth with knowledge of their democratic rights and duties, encouraging constructive socio-political engagement.
