Sri Lanka Labour Ministry, ILO, IOM discuss labour reforms
COLOMBO – Sri Lanka’s Minister of Labour Manusha Nanayakkara met with International Labour Organization (ILO) Director General Gilbert F. Houngbo to discuss labour reforms, Nanayakkara’s media secretary Sanjaya Nallaperuma said on Wednesday (12).
He said the minister discussed provisions in the new employment act aimed at combating discrimination, workplace violence and protecting domestic workers and that Houngbo had said the ILO will support Sri Lanka’s program to upskill workers aimed at the international labour market.
He also noted that the labour ministry discussed a project with the ILO and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to increase female employment in the formal sector and to train care workers.
Nallaperuma said the ministry officials had outlined plans to ratify the Occupational Safety and Health Convention (C155), Domestic Workers Convention (C189), and Violence and Harassment Convention (C190).
