Sabry calls Myanmar counterpart for help in repatriating Myawaddy detainees
COLOMBO –Minister of Foreign Affairs Ali Sabry has sought urgent intervention from the Government of Myanmar, for the release of 56 Sri Lankans being illegally held in the Myawaddy area,
The Sri Lankans who are believed to have entered Myanmar on tourist visas in search of employment are being described as ‘victims of human trafficking for cybercrimes’.
A statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Sabry had contacted the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Myanmar, U Than Swe, by telephone on Wednesday (3), to discuss the issue of Sri Lankans held in the Myawaddy area, and sought the assistance and urgent intervention of the Government of Myanmar in having them released.
The statement said the ministry continues to explore all possible avenues to ensure the safety and security of Sri Lankans and seek early repatriation in consultation with the Government of Myanmar.
