One Sri Lankan injured in escalating Israel-Palestine conflict
COLOMBO – At least one Sri Lanka citizen was injured in escalation of hostilities between Israel and Hamas militants in Palestine, the Foreign Ministry said calling for restraint and an immediate halt to the violence.
“The Sri Lanka Missions in Tel Aviv and Ramallah are monitoring the situation closely and are in contact with Sri Lankans living in the affected areas,” a Foreign Ministry statement said.
“So far one Sri Lankan has sustained minor injuries,” it noted.
The current flare up is the worst violence seen in Israel since the Yom Kippur war, reports said.
“Sri Lanka is deeply concerned about the attacks and escalation of violence and the resulting loss of life in Israel and Palestine,” the Foreign Ministry said, calling for an immediate halt to violence and for all parties to exercise maximum restraint to prevent further civilian casualties.
A surprise attack by Hamas on Israel – combining gunmen breaching security barriers and a barrage of rockets fired from Gaza – was launched at dawn during the Jewish holiday of Simchat Torah on Saturday (7), leaving more than 200 dead. Retaliatory strikes by Israeli for have so far killed a similar number of persons in Palestine.
Conflicts between Israel and Hamas has flared up recent months as a hardline government expanded settlements in the Gaza area as well as attacks by Palestinian residents and militants on according to international reports.
