Labour minister talks workplace rights with transgender community
COLOMBO – Sri Lanka’s labour minister, Manusha Nanayakkara, met with members of the transgender community on Tuesday (19) to discuss their workplace rights.
“Pleased to share that we’re considering a dedicated trade union and aligning our labour laws with global standards like ILO’s C190 and C180,” Nanayakkara said in a twitter message.
Sri Lanka’s efforts to recognize the rights of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or questioning (LGBTQ) community has been progressed by the private member bill pushed by Member of Parliament Premnath Dolawatte for the repeal of section 365 and 365 (a) which decriminalizes homosexuality.
“Transgenderism does have a place in Sri Lankan law,” Police Media Spokesperson, Nihal Thalduwa said noting that other than the transition between genders, LGBTQ+ activity is unlawful.
However, the transgender community has often been detained by the provisions of 399 of the Penal Code which criminalizes cheating by impersonation and by the provisions of the Vagrants’ Ordinance.
