Sri Lanka to initiate fresh probe into Channel 4 allegations
COLOMBO – The government has said it will conduct a fresh probe into the allegations made in Channel 4’s Dispatch program on the 2019 Easter Sunday attacks, implicating a senior intelligence official and the Rajapaksa family.
Minister of Labour and Foreign Employment, Manusha Nanayakkara, told Parliament on Tuesday (5) that during the Cabinet meeting held Monday (4), it was proposed to appoint a Special Parliamentary Select Committee for this purpose.
Nanayakkara said the government had also discussed the need to obtain international assistance to investigate the claims and that the government will do so if necessary.
Assuring the government will never step back from addressing the new allegations, he also accused Channel 4 of having a common practice to broadcast such videos close to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) sessions held in Geneva.
However, he said he was of the opinion that the allegations in the video must definitely be investigated.
Nanayakkara was responding to questions raised in Parliament over Channel 4’s claims implicating intelligence chief Suresh Sallay as being complicit in the bombings that killed 279 people, including 45 foreign nationals.
The bombshell Channel 4 video, containing exclusive interviews with high-placed whistleblowers, was telecast in the UK on Tuesday.
