Sri Lanka To Give Welfare Benefits From July
About 3.7 million persons had applied for the scheme
COLOMBO – Sri Lanka is expecting to give welfare benefits up to 15,000 rupees to about 2.3 million persons under a World Bank backed program where recipients will be reviewed periodically, officials said.
About 3.7 million persons had applied for the scheme Sri Lanka’s Welfare Benefits Board had vetted 3.3 million so far.
Payments will begin directly to recipient’s bank accounts from July 01, State Minister for Finance Shehan Semasinghe said.
The list is available online at the Welfare Benefit Board’s website (https://iwms.wbb.gov.lk/household/list)
Applicants who are not included could lodge appeals.
The World Bank is expected to chip in 200 million dollars in a loan to be approved on June 28.
The government is expecting to spend 208 billion rupees a year under the program.
About 400,000 families identified as very poor will get 15,000 rupees a month. Another 800,000 families will get 8,500 a months. Another 400,000 have been identified as vulnerable and 400,000 as poor.
About 300,000 individuals will also get old age benefits and kidney patient support.
An earlier Samurdhi branded program gave money to 1.8 million persons. About a third may lose benefits while a large number of new applicants who did not earlier get benefits despite being poor will be included in the new scheme. – EconomyNext
