Dr Anoma Wijesinghe creates Lionistic history
COLOMBO – Dr Anoma Wijesinghe, who created history when she was elected the first Lady District Governor of Lions International District 306-B1, Sri Lanka, has earned the accolade of fellow Lions and Lionesses, for living up to expectations and personifying the Lionistic Motto ‘We Serve’.
Dr Wijesinghe MJF, MAF, a medical doctor by profession began her ascent to the coveted district leadership position in the Lionistic Year 2020/2021 when she was unanimously elected the 2nd Vice District Governor of District 306-B1. A year later she was elected the 1st District Governor and in the Lionistic Year 2022/2023 as the 1st Lady District Governor of the District.
Lions International District 306-B1 welcomed Dr Wijesinghe’s election as a proud moment for the District, noting that she adds glamour and status to the District hierarchy.
Coming from a highly motivational professional family involved in the field of medicine, Dr Wijesinghe had her primary education at Sujatha Vidyalaya in Matara and her secondary education at Devi Balika Vidyalaya in Colombo, from where she entered the Medical Faculty in Colombo, passing out with a shining rank among the first 21 in the entire Country.
Presently she is a practicing medical doctor in the private sector, having followed her brother and sister.
Charming in look and personality, the 1st Lady District Governor is married to Lion Lakshman Wijesinghe, PMJF, MAF, a multitalented personality and a successful businessman, who himself led the District as District Governor in the Lionistic Year 2009/2010. The couple have two daughters who are both doctors.
A multitasker with a blessed family and home, Dr Wijesinghe, who is equally devoted to her profession, lives the Lionistic Motto ‘We Serve’.
Dr Wijesinghe simplicity was demonstrated when she selected ‘Co-existence with Others’, as the theme for the year, which was deemed very appropriate for a country striving for ‘togetherness’ to face the many challenges
Giving weightage to her medical professionalism and Lionism, she chose ‘School Sanitary Project’ as the District’s primarily project for her year of Governorship, providing healthy clean toilets to over 150 Schools in the Lions District of 306-B1.
With the Lionistic Year 2022/2023 set to end on June 30, 2023, Dr Wijesinghe, despite her busy schedules, has visited almost all the Clubs (100 +) in the District, spreading from Colombo Pettah, along the Coastal Belt of Sri Lanka – Wattala, Pamunugama, Negombo to Wayamba, Chilaw, Puttalam, Mannar and Jaffna. She has also had 14 new clubs added this year and has supported the Lions International with a record 38 new Melvin Jones Fellows. These were possible owing to her great motivational factor.
Dr Wijesinghe has proved the importance of ‘Co-Existence’, even among genders and has also motivated the ladies to take up leadership, proving that ladies are equal partners, practicing and living up to the Lionistic Motto ‘We Serve’.
