COLOMBO – A landslide in Akurana in the Central Province killed two from a family of five trapped under the debris on Christmas Eve, even as the Department of Meteorology forecast heavy showers for many parts of the country for the 48 hours ending Monday (26).
The Disaster Management Centre (DMC) confirmed on Sunday (25) a house was buried under a rock due to a landslide in the Akurana area in Kandy, killing two siblings, a 19-year old female and an 18-year old male.
Five people had been trapped and only three were rescued.
The National Building Research Organization issued a level 1 landslide warning in Kandy, Kegalle, Matale, Nuwara Eliya and Kurunegala early Sunday morning, urging the people in the areas to be vigilant.
The Department of Meteorology said they expect heavy showers in many parts of the country in the next 48 hours, attributing it to a depression over southwest Bay of Bengal, moving across the country. The Department said strong winds can also be expected at times over the country.
Meanwhile, the Irrigation Department said the water levels of many reservoirs have risen due to the heavy rains, warning those who live in low-lying areas near rivers to be vigilant of floods.
The Department of Railways announced that train services in central Sri Lanka have been disrupted due to minor rock and earth slips and several trains have been cancelled.
