The supreme leadership of the Bangladeshi liberation movement established the provisional Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, popularly known as the Mujibnagar Government, on this day in 1971, following the declaration of independence of East Pakistan on April 10 the same year. The government was headed by Prime Minister Tajuddin Ahmad, and comprised a cabinet, a diplomatic corps, an assembly, an armed force, and a radio service. The government was headquartered in Kolkata, in exile, the capital of the Indian state of West Bengal.
